One of the places locally we like to go for family outings is during the summer is the pond at the now defunct Trojan Nuclear facility. There are lots of walking paths, wildlife, picnic tables, restrooms, fishing and a little picturesque bridge. One day last July We managed to get there pretty early in the day, and the light was just beautiful.

My kids love to go there to see the ducks and the frogs, and on this particular trip we got an extra special treat and spotted a turtle swimming near the shore..

One of the birds I like to keep an eye out for while I am there are Great Blue Herons. During our walk that morning I was able to successfully stalk and photograph one.

In this dreamy photo full of warm, summer sunlight, geese swim contentedly in the pond at what was once the site of Trojan nuclear power plant near Goble, Oregon. Walking paths meander along the shore in the background, inviting a morning stroll, as tree reflections shimmer in dark, shadowy pond water.

Like a prayer that lifts us up from our troubles to see a glimpse of the beauty and majesty of god’s plan for us, the great blue heron takes flight from the marsh towards the footbridge and the misty mountains beyond. Set at Trojan pond near Goble, Oregon.

In process of  rephotographing my artwork with the new camera I got for Christmas, I realized I had not written a blog post about Flight of the Great Blue Heron.

There is an interesting story behind this painting:

Back in 2006 we went fishing at the pond at the site of the old Trojan nuclear facility(near Goble, Oregon). On one of my many trips escorting kids to and from the bathroom that day, this great blue heron went swooping down to the water and away again.  Unable to whip my camera out quick enough to get the shot, I kept going back hoping the bird would be there again. Finally several hours later I said a prayer in my head asking for the bird to come back so I could get some pictures. Within minutes the heron swooped down again, sticking around long enough for me to get quite a few good photographs. Amazingly enough even the dog managed not to frighten it away.

Before beginning this painting I had been hearing quite a bit about achieving interesting results by painting on Yupo paper with watercolors. I didn’t have money to buy new paper at the time, but thought maybe applying a layer of gesso to the paper and painting on top of that would create similar effects. It worked beautifully, causing the paint to slide around with a loose slippery feel, creating a light airy feel to the mountains in the distant background. As an added bonus this brought an element of fun and spontaneity back into my artwork–as opposed to the drudgery of trying to be photo-realistic.

A few years ago I got some spectacular photos of a Great Blue Heron while on a family outing at Trojan.  This past week I decided to use this shot of the large bird swooping over the water with its wings outstretched to their full span and its feet trailing behind to create some new items on zazzle.

Double Crested Cormorant #1

Double Crested Cormorant #1

These photos were taken at Trojan pond this summer. At first  I thought this was a duck. It does look a little like one in the small viewfinder on my camera LOL . However as I prepared to post these pictures for sale, I realized that it was a type of bird I was unfamiliar with.

It took me quite a bit of time to figure out what it  was. I tried looking up all sort of different waterfowl on wikipedia with no luck. Finally I decided to check out the website for the Audubon society, which led me to the web page of their Lincoln City, Oregon chapter where there was a section on birds that are likely to bee seen in Oregon. When I was the image of double crested cormorants there, I thought that might be what I had photographed. After looking them up on Wikipedia to see more photos, I was sure.

I love how wistful this double crested cormorant looks standing all alone on the log above his reflection. He seems to be pondering his lonesomeness and looking for a friend as he gazes into the distance. In reality, if you zoom in close, he appears to be munching on something 😉 . Perhaps this is just his favorite fishing spot.
