One of the places locally we like to go for family outings is during the summer is the pond at the now defunct Trojan Nuclear facility. There are lots of walking paths, wildlife, picnic tables, restrooms, fishing and a little picturesque bridge. One day last July We managed to get there pretty early in the day, and the light shining through the trees and on the water was just beautiful.

My kids love to go there to see the ducks and the frogs, and on this particular trip we got an extra special treat and spotted a turtle swimming near the shore..

One of the birds I like to keep an eye out for while I am there are Great Blue Herons. During our walk that morning I was able to successfully stalk and photograph one.

Finally getting around to posting again after being in a bit of a blue funk for the past several months. I think I just got burnt out over the holidays trying to do too much and hyper focusing on posting holiday items on Zazzle. Blogging was just one more thing on my already too long to-do list, and it felt futile and pointless there for a while.

About a month ago I was feeling a little down and decided to do some photo manipulation for a bit of a pick-me-up. This one turned out so well I just had to share it:

These lovely red lilies were photographed back in July while out on a walk. I spotted them growing in front of a shed at the edge of somebody’s yard. I Love the interesting color and texture that created behind the lilies. The lady that lives there grows a plethora of gorgeous flowers. Some day when I am feeling brave I may ask for a tour and permission to photograph more extensively. (I NEVER set foot on someone’s property to get a picture without asking.)

For those of you who are interested in the nitty-gritty of how I attained the lovely effects in this photo:

In addition to playing with the lighting, contrast, and focus, there are several layers of texture photos such as: macro shots of the inside of my wok –where the Teflon has started flaking off– and some of a finger painting session my toddler did in sour cream on the sliding glass doors. The finishing touch –which occurred to me as I was laying in bed, falling asleep and mulling over what was missing to pull it all together–was to add a purplish-blue tint to each corner using semi-transparent gradients.

In this elegant digital photo of some red lilies glowing in the summer sunlight, tinting and textures, combined with warm glints of golden color, create splashes of energy, ebb and flow, and an aura of magic shimmering with romance.

On another walk during the beginning of July, I spotted these stunning little clover with their magnificent red leaves growing at the edge of a parking lot near the sidewalk. I’m pretty sure they are a hare’s foot trefoil, although they are really different from the fairly drab one’s I photographed later in the season a summer or two ago, because they still have the characteristic rabbit’s foot shaped blossoms.

Here is another photo I took of another sprig of clover in the same location that day. Notice the lovely color variation in the flowers, which is quite stunningly different from the uniform pale lavender blossoms in the 1st photo. The burgundy spikes mixed with the whitish fluff is quite dramatic. I am assuming they are still just another variety of Hare’s foot trefoil, although I’m certainly no expert on the subject. Since St.Patrick’s day is coming up next month, I’m wondering which is considered more lucky though, a four-leaf clover or one with blossoms shaped like rabbit’s feet? 😉 Lol.

Yesterday while looking through some of my images on zazzle.com, I realized I had neglected to create a poster out of this fabulous photograph of a yellow and black striped butterfly perched on the lilac bush in our back yard. Several years ago when there were some beautiful large butterflies flitting around the garden my Daughter insisted I snap a picture of one for her I chased that butterfly around the back yard for what seemed like hours with my daughter’s help keeping an eye on where it went until I could catch a decent photo of it holding still.

When I created this poster and some other items for sale out of this picture yesterday, I decided I’d better figure out exactly what kind of butterfly I had a picture of.  So after some sleuthing on the internet,  I learned that it is probably a Western Tiger Swallowtail (it could possibly be a Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, they look very similar to me) . It was also interesting to learn that the Oregon swallowtail became the Oregon state insect in 1979. I learn all sorts of interesting things in the process of selling my photography 😉

update: Although i originally thought these flowers were lilacs, I have recently discovered they are actually the flowers of a butterfly bush.

Here are the poster, and some of the other items I have created using this marvelous photo:

NEW CUSTOM BUTTERFLY SHOES!

On the toes and heels of these custom  shoes is a strikingly beautiful yellow Western Tiger Swallowtail with black stripes sipping nectar from a cluster of pink lilac flowers in front of a softly focused background of green foliage. The shoes’ sides are in a colorful fun floral print. Shown here with pink and yellow trim, slate green insole, and cream mid sole–this shoe also looks great with black soles.

Last week when I was doing some marketing optimization of my Zazzle product ( making sure there are links to help people find matching postage, stationery, and stickers etc). I decided that some of the details in my water soluble oil painting, Midsummer Daydream, would make some beautiful stickers to match some of the stationery I already had for sale. They also make pretty magnets and key chains.

Oakridge Reservoir #1

Oakridge Reservoir #1 by Dawna Morton

Watercolor on Fabriano Uno 140 lb cold press paper, 7 1/2″ x 11″, 2001. A tangle of tree roots protrudes upward from the fallen tree and juts out towards the glassy water of Oakridge Reservoir. As the water begins to get deeper, algae and tree stumps seem to float, casting their suspended reflections. The peaceful water mirrors the distant shore of Oregon trees and mountains.

One in a series of four painting based on some photos I took while camping in Oakridge, Oregon, this beautiful watercolor painting features pale blue mountain ranges in an early morning sky reflected int the deep, tranquil blue water of Oakridge Reservoir, circling around through greener forested hills closer to the shore, a grouping of 2 stumps and a fallen log sticking out of the shallower water , and an uprooted tree jutting into the water from the unseen shore in the foreground.

Algae Frond Macro

Taken while canoeing at Ensign Ranch in Cle Elum, Washington, in July 2008, this macro photo of an algae frond in the water resembles an abstract painting . I love the golden glints of sunlight in the ripples on the green  water’s surface over the glowing sunlit water plant below.

Fairy Ring in the Water #1

Last month my family went fishing at Trojan pond near Rainier, Oregon. It is a beautiful spot and rarely ever crowded. As usual I brought my camera along in search of reference photos. I came across a lovely sight as I hiked around the pond with the non-fishers in our family. There was a grouping of water plants in a circular formation in the greenish water. They glowed white in the sunlight, as the water shimmered around them. they seemed to float in the reflections like some sort of mystic fairy ring in the water.

Last week I decided to do a painting of it entirely from memory. ( This is an exercise in the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards). It is interesting how hard it is to remember details when painting from memory. Although remembering the general idea of an image is fairly simple, trying to remember the details clearly enough to paint them is nearly impossible. However, I really like how this turned out.
