Yesterday I created a series of products on Zazzle using my photo, Sunrise Over the Columbia River #9…
Layers of lavender purple and pink clouds glow in the dawn light as the sun rises over the Columbia River in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. A white Masonic Lodge nestles next to a church among the shadowy trees of the Rainier, Oregon forest as the Columbia river flows past the city lights of Kelso and Longview, Washington twinkling against the dark backdrop of the mountains ranges beyond.

I think it was back in October or early November when I was in the middle of getting the kids ready for school I noticed how beautiful the sunrise was. I managed to run for my camera and hop out to the back deck and get some gorgeous photos during all the early morning rush.

A Masonic lodge is nestled in the predawn twilight of the Rainier, Oregon forest as the clouds in the sky above change to hues or coral, pink, lavender, and purple in the light of the rising sun. Beyond the unseen Columbia River the somber pacific northwest mountain ranges surround Longview and Kelso, Washington.

Recently I added a series of products to my zazzle store featuring my watercolor painting Oakridge Reservoir #2. The original is on Fabriano Uno 140lb hot press 100% cotton paper, 7 1/2″ x 11″, 2001. This is one in a series of four paintings based on some photos I took early in the morning while camping with my family in Oakridge, Oregon. Done in an almost photo-realistic style, this painting draws the eye beyond the upended tree roots protruding from the shore of Oakridge Reservoir toward the mountain ranges and pale blue morning sky in the distance. A lone twig sticks up from the water, while algae and tree stumps seem to float tranquilly and as the water deepens. Green and gold, the colors of the forest shimmer in the water as the cool blue Oregon mountains beckon as they glistening white shore in the distance. Many guests visiting my home have stared in amazement and asked, “is that a photograph?” because of how realistic it is.They are even more astounded when I tell them it’s a painting.
Although I painted this series specifically with the intention to sell the original paintings, my family loves them so much I have been forbidden to ever sell the originals 🙂 For those who are interested in owning a copy I have archival quality fine art prints available for purchase at Imagekind.com, posters at Zazzle.com and matted prints at Redbubble.com..and now these new items on zazzle…

Michael at the Waterpump, water-soluble oils on gessoed paper, 11 1/16″ x 15 1/16″, 2001. Intellectual property of Dawna Morton. All rights reserved. Do not copy in any form. At a scenic campsite in the forested hills surrounding Oakridge, Oregon, a child and his mother discover the joy of an old-fashioned red water pump after feasting on huckleberries. Poised in mid-stroke of the pump the mother’s figure is bathed half in sunlight and half in dappled shadow with a sense of continuing motion. As the crystal clear mountain water cascades from the spout Michael washed the huckleberry stains from his tiny fingers in joy and wonderment. Surrounding this nostalgic scene is an array of pacific northwest foliage and trees rendered in impressionistic strokes.
I recently created many product on zazzle.com featuring this nostalgic painting. Here is one of several fridge magnets which would make a great inexpensive mother’s day gift or just an everyday expression of appreciation.
Also available is this clear frosted glass mug, perfect for anything frosty cold or piping hot. See your drink peeking through photos, images, or text designs. Dishwasher and microwave safe. Imported. This design is also available on other mug styles, colors, and sizes. Feel free to customize the text with your own unique message for your mom or other loved one.

This is one of a set of four small paintings I did quite some time ago of Oakridge Reservoir. At that point I was going for more of a photo realism than an impressionist feel. Originally, what drew me to paint this particular scene was the weather beaten stump and tangle of dead gray branches in the foreground. My favorite aspect now is the way the algae can be seen floating under the surface of the water where it is still shallow near the stump.
Although I had not yet studied composition, it does have good composition with the eye flowing easily from the stump, down through the tree branches to the algae in the lower right hand corner, and then up through the pattern of darker waves in the water to the forested mountains in the uppermost right, continuing counter clockwise across the more distant mountain ranges hazy and glowing yellow in the morning light to the tree covered hills on the left, and back down to wards the tree stump again through the shadowy reflection of one of the trees in the water.
Usually I like a very smooth watercolor paper because it does not give me any surprises in where the paint pools, but I think in this case the rough paper helped with the effect of the algae in the water. I experimented with the new paper because there had been an ad in Artist Magazine to write and get some samples of Fabriano Uno paper. Up until that time I had been painting my watercolors all on regular sketch paper because all the watercolor paper I had seen in highschool had been extremely textured, which did not appeal to me. I definitely like the thicker watercolor paper. The higher the number of pounds, the better I like it. I still tend to go for a really smooth texture on the paper though… guess I’m still a bit of a control freak 😉
