Butterfly at the Veil by Dawna Morton

Butterfly at the Veil, watercolor painting on gessoed canvas-board, by Dawna Morton, 2013.

I originally started this painting so I would have an entry for the local art associations art contest this summer, however life with 6 kids isn’t always conducive to having enough time to paint–and the kids come first 😉 I think I managed to get it done within about a month of the deadline. I had a photo of some ‘snow in summer’ flowers that I had taken through my front window as a photographic experiment after I got my new camera, and I loved the feel of the one this painting is based on –although the photo itself turned out a little blurry. I had a couple of small canvas boards a friend gave me for Christmas, and decided to use those to experiment with different media and effects for the background. Click here to see it as a work in progress, and to see some of the other background ideas I played with…

In order to quickly see how which background type looked best with the flowers, I printed out a copy of my reference photo and just cut them out of it so I could lay them over each of the canvases in turn. This worked extraordinarily well since the canvases weren’t much bigger than my printout. I ended up going with this purple watercolor because it more closely mimicked the feel I was looking for. with the deadline looming I decided to trace the paper cut out onto the canvas to save time. Hopefully nobody feels like that was cheating. I ten drew in the details and made some alterations–such as changing which direction the main blossom was facing. I also moved the flowers on this side of the window and suggested a curtain with light coming through it instead of a screen and the edge of the windowsill with the flowers outside. Then I added a butterfly to balance everything out and add some additions interest.

Everything was coming along nicely until the three-year-old got a hold of it. One of those moments where the house was suspiciously quiet for entirely too long prompted me to figure out what she was up to. She had managed to get herself into the art room and nabbed the paints and was happily painting away in a bold red. Thankfully She had laid a few pieces of paper across the top first–which caught the worst of it; however, there was still the problem of bright red splotches on a very simple all purple palette.

Luckily the red lifted off of the gessoed surface beautifully, and I did not have to go with plan b — adding a bunch of red flowers to the right hand corner.

As I was working on the composition and painting a symbolic meaning to everything came into play. The three sections of curtain across the window is a sort of representation of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost–united yet separate and distinct at the same time as they are one. Then there is the light coming through the curtain –which represents  inspiration, revelation and those moments when we feel that heaven is near. Truly the veil is thin sometimes. This is also a reference to the temple and going there for additional revelation, inspiration, peace and to be spiritual uplifted. The butterfly is a representation of being visited by the Holy Ghost, which was inspired by an article I read to my children many years ago in the Friend magazine about how being reverent is like sitting quiet and still so you can catch a butterfly, or feel the Holy Ghost. The flowers are a representation of each of us, as we grow and blossom in readiness to hear, inspiration is more frequent and clear, and easier to understand– and in turn spiritual light nourishes us so we can grow and blossom. And of course: God is the source of all light (revelation inspiration, and so on) and we are completely dependent on them. The overall feel and tranquility in this painting is symbolic of how we feel when we commune with God and the peace and comfort He sends us through the Holy Ghost.

You can find “Butterfly at the Veil” for sale as a print at FineArtAmerica, imagekind, Redbubble, zazzle , and Amazon. So far the original is not for sale. The family loves it too much 😉

On Memorial Day I took my kids down to the park to play. These beautiful wildflowers were growing in the grass near the path. They look like a silver bush lupine or maybe a sierra lupine.

part 2 of 2

Back in mid May I got these beautiful pictures after dropping the kids off at school in the morning. It had just finished raining and the sun came out, shining beautifully on the irises that bloom beside my driveway. Then I had some fun playing around with graduated tints and such to make these photos even more dramatic.

Here is one with a sepia tint that has been warmed, had the saturation boosted a bit, as well as having had a few other changes made to it. I love the copper tones in it as well as the old fashioned feel that is enhanced by the white picket fence in the back ground.

This soft and dreamy photo of a purple iris in the green grass in front of a white house has been given an abstracted impressionistic style. Covered in raindrops this beautiful flower stands out from the muted greens, pink and lavender gray background.

This picture started out with a house and several cars in the background. After removing the cars and making several other changes, I decided I liked the house but wanted it softer.  So then I opened it up with paint.net and multiple layers with a variety of layer properties to  make the background more soft and abstract as well as using picassa to make some other changes. This turned out beautifully with this picture; however, as I was writing this blog post it became apparent to me that the house in the background was drawing too much attention away from the flower which was supposed to be the main focal point.

The next picture darkens the house with some blue and purple tones as well as simplifying and darkening the foreground surrounding the flower. The results are truly lovely.

While I was out hiding the Easter eggs I noticed some trillium flowers were blooming out in our forest earlier than usual. So the next time the light was good I grabbed my camera and hiked back out there. There are definitely benefits to living on a half acre of forest 🙂 I only got a couple of shots before the sun went behind the clouds, but that’s typical Oregon spring weather for you 😉

Glistening wet from a recent spring shower, this exotic looking purple trillium blooms beautifully in the Oregon rain forest. A ray of bright sunlight warms the ferns and leaf strewn forest floor in the background.

Several years ago, when we were returning from a family vacation, I snapped some photos of a beautiful sunset through the passenger window of our car. We were traveling along HWY 97 and HWY 26 from the Bend area to the vicinity of Portland, Oregon. What attracted me in this particular shot was the rhythmic patterns of the sprinklers in foreground. If memory serves correctly, the sprinklers were watering a crop of fragrant mint. As the many row of sprinklers each moved back and forth in unison, the sunset lights up layers of clouds above a beautiful view of a broad expanse of the cascade mountains. I think the tallest may be Broken Top, although I am not entirely sure.
I did end up editing this photo by removing some of the part closer to the car which were blurred because we were still in motion, as well as removing evidence of the car window from the shot. I have another version where I adjusted some of the lighting and colors, which I  posted earlier.

I think it was back in October or early November when I was in the middle of getting the kids ready for school I noticed how beautiful the sunrise was.  I managed to run for my camera and hop out to the back deck and get  some gorgeous photos during all the early morning rush.

Sunrise Over the Columbia River #9

Layers of lavender purple and pink clouds glow in the dawn light as the sun rises over the Columbia River in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. A white Masonic Lodge nestles next to a church among the shadowy trees of the Rainier, Oregon forest as the Columbia river flows past the city lights of Kelso and Longview, Washington twinkling against the dark backdrop of the mountains ranges beyond.

This stationery features an inset of the painting Spring Apple, acrylic on canvas, by Dawna Morton, 5×5″, 2008.

A red  apple and sprig of white apple blossoms on a green and purple background is painted in an impressionistic style and lit up with  a splash of vibrant sunlight.

This would be a fun stationery for a teacher, educator, or a health professional.
