On Memorial day when I took the kids for a walk down to the local park to play, I got these beautiful pictures of a bird in a bush. It took a while to figure out where exactly the tweeting was coming from, and then some patient bird stalking to get close enough to get these, but they turned out lovely. Although it was fairly easy to learn that the bird was a white crested sparrow, it took more searching than usual to discover that the bush with its clusters of blue blossoms is a blue blossom Ceanothus Thyrsiflorus bush which is native to California.

Yesterday while looking through some of my images on zazzle.com, I realized I had neglected to create a poster out of this fabulous photograph of a yellow and black striped butterfly perched on the lilac bush in our back yard. Several years ago when there were some beautiful large butterflies flitting around the garden my Daughter insisted I snap a picture of one for her I chased that butterfly around the back yard for what seemed like hours with my daughter’s help keeping an eye on where it went until I could catch a decent photo of it holding still.

When I created this poster and some other items for sale out of this picture yesterday, I decided I’d better figure out exactly what kind of butterfly I had a picture of.  So after some sleuthing on the internet,  I learned that it is probably a Western Tiger Swallowtail (it could possibly be a Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, they look very similar to me) . It was also interesting to learn that the Oregon swallowtail became the Oregon state insect in 1979. I learn all sorts of interesting things in the process of selling my photography 😉

update: Although i originally thought these flowers were lilacs, I have recently discovered they are actually the flowers of a butterfly bush.

Here are the poster, and some of the other items I have created using this marvelous photo:

A strikingly beautiful yellow and black striped Western Tiger Swallowtail  sips nectar from pink lilac flowers. The softly focused green foliage of the lilac bush sets up a lovely background for this photograph.

NEW CUSTOM BUTTERFLY SHOES!

On the toes and heels of these custom  shoes is a strikingly beautiful yellow Western Tiger Swallowtail with black stripes sipping nectar from a cluster of pink lilac flowers in front of a softly focused background of green foliage. The shoes’ sides are in a colorful fun floral print. Shown here with pink and yellow trim, slate green insole, and cream mid sole–this shoe also looks great with black soles.

Last week I used my photo of Fox Creek, Rainier, Oregon to create some stationery, stickers, cards, post cards, postage, magnets, mugs, key chains, shirts, mouse pads, aprons, and canvas totes on zazzle .com

in this photograph, sunlit forest reflections shimmer in the water of Fox Creek as it meanders past banks of moss covered rocks and boulders, under the fallen log bridge, and on through the ferny forest towards the radiant sky overlooking the unseen Columbia River.

Several years ago, when we were returning from a family vacation, I snapped some photos of a beautiful sunset through the passenger window of our car. We were traveling along HWY 97 and HWY 26 from the Bend area to the vicinity of Portland, Oregon. What attracted me in this particular shot was the rhythmic patterns of the sprinklers in foreground. If memory serves correctly, the sprinklers were watering a crop of fragrant mint. As the many row of sprinklers each moved back and forth in unison, the sunset lights up layers of clouds above a beautiful view of a broad expanse of the cascade mountains. I think the tallest may be Broken Top, although I am not entirely sure.
I did end up editing this photo by removing some of the part closer to the car which were blurred because we were still in motion, as well as removing evidence of the car window from the shot and adjusting some of the lighting and colors. I have another version where I left the coloring closer to the original photo, which I will be posting later.

Today I finally finished the drawing for a Christmas card design I  started on 3 Christmases ago.  Originally I was going to do what most greeting card companies suggest and cut paper and use that technique to keep the design simple. I even had some brown paper that was just the right color for the camels that I wanted on my card.  So after going to Wetcanvas.com and checked their free reference photo library to refresh my mind on what a camel REALLY looks like, I turned the computer off and got to work drawing some camels on my brown paper and cutting them out with an Exacto knife. The camels turned out really well and there was even one who looked particularly spunky and happy to be traveling to Bethlehem. doing the paper cut outs did help with the composition, because it was then just an easy matter of placing one overlapping the other instead of trying to figure out where one would end and the other begin while I was drawing them. By the time I had gotten the Christmas star as well as some other stars cut out, in addition to my camels, some wise men, the manger, and a concept sketch for Mary and Joseph cut out I decided what I really wanted to do was to PAINT the card rather than work with paper cut outs.  In retrospect I wish I had stayed with the original concept instead of changing in mid stream, because I would have been done a long time ago. It created a lot of extra work to have to trace the things I had already cut out onto another piece of paper.  Then I started a long and tedious process of  drawing on tracing paper  and then tracing what I had drawn onto some heavy duty art paper after having cut it and arranged it in the composition I wanted.  Another thing I wish I had done a little differently would be to make the original drawing larger than the card and then just use the computer to shrink it down. Of course that might just encourage me to add even more detail and make things even more complicated ;/

I love the composition in this card. What I was really going for was the “perfect” Christmas card–something that perfectly expressed my feelings and sentiments about the meaning of Christmas, rather than some of the shallower, albeit fun Christmas messages out there. So in the center of this design is a heart with the Christmas star centered above it and piercing downward into it. Then moving around clockwise like a Mandela three little stars seem to dance in with joy in the night sky with the desire to follow the three wise men to Bethlehem. The three wisemen and their camels curve around the heart , hugging it closely on their journey to see the newborn king. Even one of the camels cannot contain his joy has as with a merry face he saunters jauntily along. Beyond the caravan a shepherd kneels with his sheep in adoration of the Christ Child. The infant Jesus smiles in his sleep in the manger as Joseph lovingly supports a weary, but joyful, Mary on his shoulder.  Moving upward around the second half of the heart, the composition then moves through some of the important events of Christ’s life.  We see the sea of Galilee where the apostles on their ship watch in awe as Christ walks toward them on the water. Next we follow a path past the house where the bedridden man is let down through the roof so that Jesus can heal him. The road continues on towards the mount where the multitude listens to Him teaching the Beatitudes. Next is a portrayal Him pleading with his Father in the Garden of Gethsemane. Beyond the Cross the Resurrected Lord is met by Mary at the tomb.

Right now this is simply a line drawing, but by this time next year I plan on having a full color version available for sale. For now, this design is also available on a variety of other zazzle products. Within the next couple days it will also be available as a print and greeting card on both Imagekind and RedBubble. (*UPDATE* now on fineartamerica too)

Last week I used this photo to make some new products on zazzle. This is one of my favorite photos –I love how as the early morning sun bursts through the trees, illuminating the forest with its heavenly glow, silhouettes of branches and leaves create a semblance of a stained glass window. It also reminded me this last week a bit of the Christmas star, so I thought it would make a nice photo card for Christmas.

Forest Sun Rays in the Snow #6 print

Ivy and moss covered evergreen trees lean to and fro, forming the shape of an N and W, in the steep sloping hills in the woods of Rainier Oregon as the melting snow drips from the trees, sparkling in the morning sun rays as it falls toward the bright white snow covered forest floor below.

Forest Sun Rays in the Snow #24 print

A ray of sunlight shines down through the snow covered forest, creating a bright icy lacework of tree branches. Four trees surround a small clearing in the woods like a bier, as logs blanketed in snow on the sloping forest floor resemble a skeleton, below icy tree limbs forming a ghostly apparition of a horses face like a trusty steed standing guard.

Heart of Stone

Heart of Stone

I took this photo during a recent trip to Cle Elum, Washington. While walking along a gravel road I happened to look down and spot this heart shaped rock. I had to snap a picture for my DH. Back when we were dating we used to  love pointing out naturally occurring hearts in rocks and other places to each other . We had a bit of a romantic notion that it was evidence that our love was meant to be 😉
