Back in may when I was editing my tulip photos I decided to do experimenting with one of them in paint.net just to see what some of the different photo editing tools did and to learn to do some new things. It’s been long enough ago now that I don’t remember all the different steps I used to create these one of the tools I used on this first one was layer properties. Opening multiple copies of the same photo and then choosing different levels of transparency and blending modes. I think I even used a polar inversion, which did some interesting things to the background on one layer.

Then when I started getting this ready to post here I decided that the tulip needed to be moved higher in the picture to create a better composition. this was done by flipping another copy of the picture upside down , and then blending the edges together, as well as making a few other changes, and then cropping it. It looks even more beautiful now.

Superimposed with many semi transparent layers of abstract shapes, this red tulip seems to be floating in a nebula of red, aquamarine and green gasses.

My kids however, thought it looked “weird” to have the tulip under the semi transparent layers, so I made this one, just for them, by adding multiple gradient layers of the tulip on top as well as adding a swirl beneath–and then doing the usual final retouches.

About a month ago while I was getting some photos ready to post for sale, I decided my bleeding heart arch across the forest picture would be even better with a more abstract background; so, I tried playing around in paint.net with using multiple semi transparent layers with different layer blend modes as well as taking it back in to picassa afterward to retouch a few areas that were still not soft enough.

I have recently started posting t shirts for sale in my Redbubble gallery. It’s not as easy to do as it is in my zazzle gallery, since I had to find, download, and learn how to use a new to me photo/image editing program. Interestingly enough I found the program because of an article on zazzle’s blog about free alternatives to Photoshop. Based on several recommendations there I decided to try out paint.net. I had previously given some thought to trying out gimp, but was unsure of how to install it and get it to work on windows. So far I am enjoying paint.net, and with some patches available for download (the links are available in their forums), I have been able to do everything I have needed.
I am still interested in getting my hands on one of those Correll paint pads I have heard so much about from other artists in artist magazine’s online art forums though. My one piece of digital art, Aeriel’s Gift, was really fun and exciting to do–but frustrating because doing any detail work was so painstakingly slow and difficult using a mouse. I would like to try doing more things like that in the future.
Here are the t shirts I have for sale on redbubble so far. They are available on several different styles of shirt as well as in multiple color choices.
9 X 12″ chalk on paper, 2009, by Dawna Morton. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
Done entirely from memory in the space of about an hour, without referencing a photo, this large magenta colored flower sits on a moody background of expressive leaf shapes. in colors of green and purple, with hints of magenta, the foliage fans out around this striking flower like a burst of living flames.
Oil pastel crayon on paper, 9X12″ circa 1992. As Cinderella approaches the stairway to the castle, a glimpse of the prince at the ball is seen through a lighted window. Neither of them knowing what the future hold in store, it is a poignant moment filled with suspense and mystery.
Watercolor on paper, 9×12″, 2008. Along the borders of Gnat Creek Oregon a tiny white wildflower blooms in front of a rock, basking in the summer sunlight. I love the warmth of the sunlight on the mottled looking rock contrasted with the cool purplish shadows and the impressionistic background of lush vegetation.

Sunrise over the Columbia River #1 by Dawna Morton
Looking from Rainier, Oregon across the Columbia river towards Washington is a spectacular view of bright sunlight shining on a layer of dark, moody clouds above a layer of golden morning sky. Beyond the silhouettes of evergreens and small town buildings, the Columbia river shimmers with an amber glow of reflected sunrise as the far bank is obscured in a dark morning mist.
Nestled among the forest silhouettes, the masonic lodge and a church steeple stand in subdued silence as the golden sunrise lights up the cloudy Oregon sky above the Columbia river.
Brilliantly the sun shines from behind darkened clouds in an early morning sky as it rises over the Columbia River. The Masonic Lodge and a church steeple nestle sleepily among the Oregon forest in Rainier, as the river flows shining in the golden sunlight toward the pacific ocean, and the opposite shore of Kelso and Longview, Washington is obscured in a hazy mist.
The Columbia River shines radiantly in the sunrise as it flows tranquilly towards the pacific ocean bordered by dark silhouettes of evergreen trees standing like sentinels on the Oregon shore and mist shrouded mountains beyond in Washington.
As the sun rises over the Columbia river, a masonic lodge and church steeple rise above the forest of the surrounding hills in Rainier, Oregon. Silvery gray and luminescent white in the early morning light, the clouds blanket the pacific northwest sky.

My husband got me a beautiful bouquet of flowers this year for valentines day: stargazer lilies and purple irises. I took some pictures of them and had fun with the editing features in picassa3. A combination of softening the background, sharpening the foreground, adding a little extra glow, and in some cases also making it a focused black and white, or even bumping up the color saturation a little created some extraordinary effects. I really like how these turned out.

During December, after a snowfall, I went hiking down the hill towards Fox Creek to get some pictures of the snow covered forest. This one had a great ethereal feel to it at thumbnail size, but it lost much of the effect when seen at full resolution. So I tried opening it up with Picassa3 and using several of the editing tools to adjust the lighting soften the edges and add a little glow to it.
A cold winters day hike through the snow towards Fox Creek in Rainier, Oregon reveals a pale blue winter sky seen through a stand of trees near the edge of a forest glade on the bottom of a sloping hill. Still attached to twigs and brambles autumn leaves appear golden in the sun like trail markers bordering a snowy path zig zagging across the hills an into the distance.

In the twilight, abstracted silhouettes of trees shapes, back lit with pink and lavender fog, create images of tree nymphs. A dryad sits atop the tree canopy holding a fairy in her hand. The wood nymphs and the sky spirit look on as she opens hear heart and offers her love as a gift to her creator. Glowing with light, her love ascends, circling up through the misty clouds and beyond the moon like smoke of incense from an alter.
