Two Augusts ago I made my first ever trip up to Mount St. Helens with my family. Despite having lived in the region all my life, I had never been before. It was definitely worth the trip.

Once we reached Johnston’s Ridge, there were some breathtaking views of the mountain as well as a nice visitors center with a movie about the eruption and tons of activities for the kids. There is a day use fee for being there though, so If you go up be prepared to fork out some money.

We only hiked up to the top of the first little viewing area and back, but it looks like it would have been fun to make a day of it and hike the whole path if we’d had more time and more energy that day. The paths  were paved  and even stroller  friendly, albeit a bit steep. Hiking along the ridge top allowed for some stunning views of the local wildflowers against the blue sky.

Last August I made my first ever trip up to Mount St. Helens with my family. Despite having lived in the region all my life, I had never been before. Along the way, we stopped at Fire Mountain Grill at Hoffstadt Bluffs for lunch. There are some great views of the Toutle River Valley from the back deck, including the desolate areas of ash and destruction which still surround the river.

The summer sun breaks through a cloudy pacific northwest sky, shining on the Toutle River as it meanders through the ash and debris left in Mt. St. Helens’ path of volcanic destruction through the Toutle river valley. Off in the distance the mountains are peaceful below the ominous clouds.

I’m not 100% sure which lake this is, but I think based on looking at maps that it is either Coldwater Lake or Clearwater Lake.

As seen from Johnston’s Ridge, near Mount Saint Helens, a hiking path climbs towards either Coldwater Lake or Clearwater Lake through mountains still recovering from the volcano’s destruction.

We only hiked up to the top of the first little viewing area and back, but it looks like it would have been fun to make a day of it and hike the whole path if we’d had more time and more energy that day. The paths  were paved  and even stroller  friendly, albeit a bit steep.

Several years ago, when we were returning from a family vacation, I snapped some photos of a beautiful sunset through the passenger window of our car. We were traveling along HWY 97 and HWY 26 from the Bend area to the vicinity of Portland, Oregon. What attracted me in this particular shot was the rhythmic patterns of the sprinklers in foreground. If memory serves correctly, the sprinklers were watering a crop of fragrant mint. As the many row of sprinklers each moved back and forth in unison, the sunset lights up layers of clouds above a beautiful view of a broad expanse of the cascade mountains. I think the tallest may be Broken Top, although I am not entirely sure.
I did end up editing this photo by removing some of the part closer to the car which were blurred because we were still in motion, as well as removing evidence of the car window from the shot. I have another version where I adjusted some of the lighting and colors, which I  posted earlier.

Yesterday I created a series of products on Zazzle using my photo, Sunrise Over the Columbia River #9…

Layers of lavender purple and pink clouds glow in the dawn light as the sun rises over the Columbia River in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. A white Masonic Lodge nestles next to a church among the shadowy trees of the Rainier, Oregon forest as the Columbia river flows past the city lights of Kelso and Longview, Washington twinkling against the dark backdrop of the mountains ranges beyond.

There is  matching postage as well as matching stickers for sale for that extra special touch to you personal correspondence.

This week I used my painting Oakridge Reservoir #4 to create some items on zazzle. The original is watercolor on Fabriano Uno 300 lb Rough 100% cotton paper, 7 1/2″ x 11″, 2001.  A gnarly tree stump surrounded by weathered gray branches juxtaposed against a view of algae and rocks under the vibrant blue water of Oakridge Reservoir. Forested green Oregon mountains frame the hazy blue mountain ranges in the distance. These would be a great inexpensive way to get a souvenir of a great vacation or just enjoy some fine art.

Recently I created a series of products for sale on zazzle.com using a fantastic photo I took last winter, forest “troll” in the snow #2.   Like something out of a fantasy novel, this tree stump resembles a mythological woodland creature such as a troll, ogre, or gnome guarding the forest. Branches dangle overhead shining in the sun like a chandelier from a castle ceiling, and ferns cascade downward illuminated by the winter sun as the snow casts a light carpet across the forest floor.

Although this photo is available on many different styles of mugs, I particularly like it on this tall transparent frosty glass mug because it really brings out the sparkle of the lighting on the snow in the photo.

On this steep, snow covered, forested slope in Rainier, Oregon an interesting tree stump looks like something out of a fantasy novel siting surrounded by ferns and basking in the morning sunlight. Reminiscent of a troll, ogre or other mythological woodland creature turned to stone, it sits as if guarding the forest below.
