This is the painting I entered in the Columbian Artists Association 36th Annual Judged/Juried Spring Show (June 18, 2012 to June 27, 2012 at the ROSE CENTER FOR THE ARTS Lower Columbia College, 1600 Maple Street Longview, Washington):
Womans Autumnal Twilight Serenade by Dawna Morton
Woman’s Autumnal Twilight Serenade by Dawna Morton~

A country girl in a white dress and cowboy hat pauses to listen to the sound of the wind before continuing to fiddle a serenade. Autumn leaves fall peacefully downward through the dark, but tranquil forest in the background, as their silently drifting shapes create an air of magical wonder —glowing in the light in their downwards spiral towards the forest floor. As the wind flutters her dress and her hair, it also picks up the notes of her music from her inward ear, and carries them afar to the world.

Woman’s Autumnal Twilight Serenade on fineartamerica

I first got the idea for this painting when I was cleaning up some gentian violet that spilled all over the bathroom counter. I made the mistake of setting the wadded up  cloth diaper which was used in the cleanup on the edge of the bathtub–which just made a bigger mess; however, when it was removed later I noticed the stain left behind resembled a cowboy hat, and upon closer inspection I saw a cowgirl playing a fiddle in my imagination. There are photos of the stain in my facebook album also.

I took a bunch of photos of the stain from all sorts of angles , and set them aside to use as a reference later before cleaning the whole thing up with a bleach spray. Then when my friend Heather suggested I should enter the competition, I thought this would make a great painting for my entry.

With a bit of a folksy feel, this painting has come to have a spiritual meaning to me. The wind can be symbolic both of trials and of the Spirit. Notice that the Tree in the background looks gnarled and weathered and bent by the winds that have beset it. We are like that sometimes, our past and the trials we’ve been through sometimes they make us feel all gnarled up inside, and we have to move beyond that and find healing. the leaves falling and glinting in the light symbolize change and the beauty of shedding the old so we can put on beautiful and tender new growth when after the process of weathering the winter season. The woman in the painting appears to have found a moment of peaceful clarity as she listens to the sound of the wind (or the Spirit)– then after listening she begins to play what she has heard, what she has learned, so that the wind can then brighten lives by carrying its message through her music to the hearts of listeners throughout the world.

One of the places locally we like to go for family outings is during the summer is the pond at the now defunct Trojan Nuclear facility. There are lots of walking paths, wildlife, picnic tables, restrooms, fishing and a little picturesque bridge. One day last July We managed to get there pretty early in the day, and the light was just beautiful.

One of the birds I like to keep an eye out for while I am there are Great Blue Herons. During our walk that morning I was able to successfully stalk and photograph one.

Last month I was out hiking in the back yard and was lucky enough to catch the salmon berries in bloom. When I was out there looking at them last year I had thought they were some sort of wild old-fashioned rose, since they are so pretty; however, this time around I was looking at their foliage closer and realized it looked more raspberry-like. that’s when it dawned on me that these were probably salmon berries which we have growing in and around the yard. after sleuthing around a bit on the internet, I was able to confirm I was right about their identification. Now if I can just manage to get back there to beat the birds and the squirrels to their delicate delectable juicy goodness…

Recently, when it was my turn to drive my son to early morning seminary, I looked out the  window and saw this brilliant sunrise. Since he wasn’t quite ready yet I nabbed my camera and dashed to the window and the back porch to snap a few pictures before it was time to head out the door.

During the snow storm around here at the end of February I was able to get a few really good pictures from some of our upper story windows over looking the Columbia River, as well as getting out and about for a hike down into the forest for a photo shoot while the light was just right.

A snowy pacific northwest morning looking across the Columbia River from Oregon towards Kelso, Washington. Beautiful snow drifts form between the evergreen trees covering the mountains beyond the bridge leading to I-5.

This photo is so exciting , because with my new canon EOS rebel T2i camera and an old Tamron af 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 tele-macro lens from my father-in-law, I was able to zoom in close enough to see this bridge clearly and use it for a foal point. I was not able to get pictures anywhere close to that far away with my old Olympus camera.

A snow-covered church steeple, topped with a little white cross, nestles in sunlit, forested hills of Rainier, Oregon as the mountain ranges beyond are still darkened with an early morning twilight.

I love the view of this church steeple from my upper story window. It creates a great focal point for my pictures. Despite this photo’s crisp clean look it took deceptively long to remove the power lines and do some other touch up. I tried out leaving in place the window screens because one of the booklets that came with the camera said when shooting up close they would not show up. Although this worked remarkably better than attempts to do the same with my old camera, it did cause an almost triple exposure look in some areas because of light refraction through the window screen. Luckily I was able to clean that up and edit it out.

Just before Thanksgiving we had a light snowfall. The kids all headed outside to play in it and I took the camera out with them and got these shots of a couple rosebuds that were still on one of my rosebushes. The sunlight was just brilliant and made for some lovely shots.

Despite the fact that these were taken the day before Thanksgiving, these made me think of a line in a Christmas song about a Christmas rose–so I did some looking online and found that Christmas roses are not actually roses at all. They are in fact a Helleborus Niger, which is a poisonous winter blossoming plant with a flower that resembles a wild rose. I had never before heard any of the folktales about the Christmas Rose but there are several here if you are interested in reading them.

About a month ago while I was getting some photos ready to post for sale, I decided my bleeding heart arch across the forest picture would be even better with a more abstract background; so, I tried playing around in paint.net with using multiple semi transparent layers with different layer blend modes as well as taking it back in to picassa afterward to retouch a few areas that were still not soft enough.

Here is the last installment of apple blossom pictures I took this spring. For some reason these first two seem to have a bit of an oriental flair, but maybe that’s just me. It’s just something about the foremost of the apple blossoms–perhaps the shape in combination with the glowing light.

Glowing translucently in the sun, white apple blossoms stretch upwards towards the sky in front of a dark forest background. On either side of the sprig of blossoms, pale green leaves with golden veins, spread transparent in the sun, tilting like the gossamer wings of a bird circling majestically in the warm spring air.

In this dreamy photograph a sprig of pink apple blossoms appears to sit at the edge of a reflective pool of water surrounded by radiantly glowing spring sunlight.

This is by far my favorite out of my apple blossom photos. I love the brilliant light that fills it, the delicate pink of the blossoms, and the overall peacefulness and tranquility of it as a whole.

Flooded with an ethereal light, this beautiful Pacific Northwest forest scene sets a perfect backdrop for this rustic little wooden birdhouse. Hanging from a lichen covered branch in front of some glowing apple blossoms, it beacons becomingly for a little birdie to make a springtime home.

Here are some more pictures I took back in April of the apple blossoms on our trees. I love the effects I was able to create using some of the tools in picassa. The abstract shapes of the light in the forest in behind this sprig of flowers helped make these truly spectacular. I hope you all enjoy these too:

This elegant, blue-tinted photo creates an atmosphere of moonlight as apple blossoms glow in the light against a dark forest background. Patterns of light and dark in the forest create an effect like a splash of luminescent water in mid-air.

A pink tint adds a dramatic flair to this elegant photo of white apple blossoms, making the light in the dark forest background appear like a splash of luminescent water in mid-air, or like firelight dancing on the crystal inside a geode.

I like to use the graduated tint feature to add tints to just part of a photo– rather than just sticking to using it solely for skies.
