Vernonia Lake is full of light and beauty. An Oregon rain splashes down–dancing on lily pads, yellow lily flowers and blue lake water in a synergy of energy, tranquility, and reflection.
Lily Pads In The Rain At Vernonia Lake at Fineartamerica
Last spring my son and I made a short stop at Vernonia lake. I had just gotten a zoom lens extender from my father-in-law, so while my son fished I tried it out on a great blue heron that was way out in the middle of the lake. It was a little tricky though since the extender does not have an auto focus or stabilizer and I did not have a tripod at that point–so the majority of the photos did not turn out well. One of the photos from that day that did turn out is the photo, taken without the extender, that I used in “Lily Pads In The Rain At Vernonia Lake” which was taken after it started to rain just before we left. I made it into a digital work of art by making the colors more vibrant, adding blue to the water and a textured layer of larger than life water splashes in the background. n addition, there is another layer of texture to add the effect of more rain droplets on the water and a neon layer to heighten the effect of water on the edges of the lily pads and the flowers.

Butterfly at the Veil by Dawna Morton

Butterfly at the Veil, watercolor painting on gessoed canvas-board, by Dawna Morton, 2013.

I originally started this painting so I would have an entry for the local art associations art contest this summer, however life with 6 kids isn’t always conducive to having enough time to paint–and the kids come first 😉 I think I managed to get it done within about a month of the deadline. I had a photo of some ‘snow in summer’ flowers that I had taken through my front window as a photographic experiment after I got my new camera, and I loved the feel of the one this painting is based on –although the photo itself turned out a little blurry. I had a couple of small canvas boards a friend gave me for Christmas, and decided to use those to experiment with different media and effects for the background. Click here to see it as a work in progress, and to see some of the other background ideas I played with…

In order to quickly see how which background type looked best with the flowers, I printed out a copy of my reference photo and just cut them out of it so I could lay them over each of the canvases in turn. This worked extraordinarily well since the canvases weren’t much bigger than my printout. I ended up going with this purple watercolor because it more closely mimicked the feel I was looking for. with the deadline looming I decided to trace the paper cut out onto the canvas to save time. Hopefully nobody feels like that was cheating. I ten drew in the details and made some alterations–such as changing which direction the main blossom was facing. I also moved the flowers on this side of the window and suggested a curtain with light coming through it instead of a screen and the edge of the windowsill with the flowers outside. Then I added a butterfly to balance everything out and add some additions interest.

Everything was coming along nicely until the three-year-old got a hold of it. One of those moments where the house was suspiciously quiet for entirely too long prompted me to figure out what she was up to. She had managed to get herself into the art room and nabbed the paints and was happily painting away in a bold red. Thankfully She had laid a few pieces of paper across the top first–which caught the worst of it; however, there was still the problem of bright red splotches on a very simple all purple palette.

Luckily the red lifted off of the gessoed surface beautifully, and I did not have to go with plan b — adding a bunch of red flowers to the right hand corner.

As I was working on the composition and painting a symbolic meaning to everything came into play. The three sections of curtain across the window is a sort of representation of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost–united yet separate and distinct at the same time as they are one. Then there is the light coming through the curtain –which represents  inspiration, revelation and those moments when we feel that heaven is near. Truly the veil is thin sometimes. This is also a reference to the temple and going there for additional revelation, inspiration, peace and to be spiritual uplifted. The butterfly is a representation of being visited by the Holy Ghost, which was inspired by an article I read to my children many years ago in the Friend magazine about how being reverent is like sitting quiet and still so you can catch a butterfly, or feel the Holy Ghost. The flowers are a representation of each of us, as we grow and blossom in readiness to hear, inspiration is more frequent and clear, and easier to understand– and in turn spiritual light nourishes us so we can grow and blossom. And of course: God is the source of all light (revelation inspiration, and so on) and we are completely dependent on them. The overall feel and tranquility in this painting is symbolic of how we feel when we commune with God and the peace and comfort He sends us through the Holy Ghost.

You can find “Butterfly at the Veil” for sale as a print at FineArtAmerica, imagekind, Redbubble, zazzle , and Amazon. So far the original is not for sale. The family loves it too much 😉

Two Augusts ago I made my first ever trip up to Mount St. Helens with my family. Despite having lived in the region all my life, I had never been before. It was definitely worth the trip.

Once we reached Johnston’s Ridge, there were some breathtaking views of the mountain as well as a nice visitors center with a movie about the eruption and tons of activities for the kids. There is a day use fee for being there though, so If you go up be prepared to fork out some money.

We only hiked up to the top of the first little viewing area and back, but it looks like it would have been fun to make a day of it and hike the whole path if we’d had more time and more energy that day. The paths  were paved  and even stroller  friendly, albeit a bit steep. Hiking along the ridge top allowed for some stunning views of the local wildflowers against the blue sky.

Finally getting around to posting again after being in a bit of a blue funk for the past several months. I think I just got burnt out over the holidays trying to do too much and hyper focusing on posting holiday items on Zazzle. Blogging was just one more thing on my already too long to-do list, and it felt futile and pointless there for a while.

About a month ago I was feeling a little down and decided to do some photo manipulation for a bit of a pick-me-up. This one turned out so well I just had to share it:

These lovely red lilies were photographed back in July while out on a walk. I spotted them growing in front of a shed at the edge of somebody’s yard. I Love the interesting color and texture that created behind the lilies. The lady that lives there grows a plethora of gorgeous flowers. Some day when I am feeling brave I may ask for a tour and permission to photograph more extensively. (I NEVER set foot on someone’s property to get a picture without asking.)

For those of you who are interested in the nitty-gritty of how I attained the lovely effects in this photo:

In addition to playing with the lighting, contrast, and focus, there are several layers of texture photos such as: macro shots of the inside of my wok –where the Teflon has started flaking off– and some of a finger painting session my toddler did in sour cream on the sliding glass doors. The finishing touch –which occurred to me as I was laying in bed, falling asleep and mulling over what was missing to pull it all together–was to add a purplish-blue tint to each corner using semi-transparent gradients.

On another walk during the beginning of July, I spotted these stunning little clover with their magnificent red leaves growing at the edge of a parking lot near the sidewalk. I’m pretty sure they are a hare’s foot trefoil, although they are really different from the fairly drab one’s I photographed later in the season a summer or two ago, because they still have the characteristic rabbit’s foot shaped blossoms.

Here is another photo I took of another sprig of clover in the same location that day. Notice the lovely color variation in the flowers, which is quite stunningly different from the uniform pale lavender blossoms in the 1st photo. The burgundy spikes mixed with the whitish fluff is quite dramatic. I am assuming they are still just another variety of Hare’s foot trefoil, although I’m certainly no expert on the subject. Since St.Patrick’s day is coming up next month, I’m wondering which is considered more lucky though, a four-leaf clover or one with blossoms shaped like rabbit’s feet? 😉 Lol.

Last month I was out hiking in the back yard and was lucky enough to catch the salmon berries in bloom. When I was out there looking at them last year I had thought they were some sort of wild old-fashioned rose, since they are so pretty; however, this time around I was looking at their foliage closer and realized it looked more raspberry-like. that’s when it dawned on me that these were probably salmon berries which we have growing in and around the yard. after sleuthing around a bit on the internet, I was able to confirm I was right about their identification. Now if I can just manage to get back there to beat the birds and the squirrels to their delicate delectable juicy goodness…

I have this poor rhododendron bush at the end of my driveway. It’s a good thing it’s hardy, since I have run over it a few times.  (The driveway is curved slightly, on a hill, and the short bush is in a bit of a blind spot when backing out.–Luckily I was able to solve that problem by planting a much more visible, taller rose bush a littler higher up the hill that I can see in the mirrors).

Last spring the sun came out after a good spring rain, and I was able to get these lovely photographs. I love how the raindrops make these flowers sparkle in the sunlight.

On the last evening before the beginning of the school year I took the kids to the local park down by the Columbia River for one last evening of carefree fun and frolicking. We stayed so late we were there to enjoy the sunset, and the sky was lit up a pretty shade of pink behind the Lewis and Clark Bridge. As I walked closer to the river to get some good pictures of the sunset, I noticed these little clumps of either light pink or white wildflowers growing in the sand near the banks. It was difficult to get a good  picture of them in the twilight, but these two turned out pretty well.

I don’t usually like morning glories. They send runners under the ground, as well as climbing on and choking out everything around them. I have often marveled that they sell seed packets for them in the stores, wondering who in their right mind would plant them on purpose–since in my yard they are second only to the english ivy in menaces that need to be removed (and only slightly behind dandelions and buttercups in weed warfare).  However, I was out walking last summer and spotted these particular morning glories back-lit with sunlight, making their centers glow in such a way that it was really quite lovely. So for those who really like them, but don’t necessarily want the heartache that goes with having them run wild in your yard…here are some pretty pictures to enjoy.
