During the snow storm around here at the end of February I was able to get a few really good pictures from some of our upper story windows over looking the Columbia River, as well as getting out and about for a hike down into the forest for a photo shoot while the light was just right.

A Masonic lodge and a church steeple topped with a little white cross are seen nestled in the snow-covered forested hills of Rainier, Oregon as brilliant morning light begins to beam through clouds above the mountain ranges looking towards Mount St Helens (which is obscured by the cloud cover).

A snowy pacific northwest morning looking across the Columbia River from Oregon towards Kelso, Washington. Beautiful snow drifts form between the evergreen trees covering the mountains beyond the bridge leading to I-5.

This photo is so exciting , because with my new canon EOS rebel T2i camera and an old Tamron af 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 tele-macro lens from my father-in-law, I was able to zoom in close enough to see this bridge clearly and use it for a foal point. I was not able to get pictures anywhere close to that far away with my old Olympus camera.

A snow-covered church steeple, topped with a little white cross, nestles in sunlit, forested hills of Rainier, Oregon as the mountain ranges beyond are still darkened with an early morning twilight.

I love the view of this church steeple from my upper story window. It creates a great focal point for my pictures. Despite this photo’s crisp clean look it took deceptively long to remove the power lines and do some other touch up. I tried out leaving in place the window screens because one of the booklets that came with the camera said when shooting up close they would not show up. Although this worked remarkably better than attempts to do the same with my old camera, it did cause an almost triple exposure look in some areas because of light refraction through the window screen. Luckily I was able to clean that up and edit it out.

Last week i created a series of product on zazzle based on my photo, Early Morning Sun Rays #19. The early morning sun beams its rays from the azure winter sky through the leafless maples to the cedars and forest below. The sky is a pristine light blue with a hint of thin white clouds in the background. Darkened outlines of bare branches in the foreground and cedar trees in the background provide stark contrast with the early morning sun. As the rays travel from the sun through the forest, several large sunspots a of lighter and darker red radiate from the sun. One small green sunspot floats like a small orb in the midst of the trees.

Last week I created a series of new product on zazzle using another photo from one of my hikes in the snow last winter. In this photo the pale blue winter sky is visible through the forest canopy, as the sun’s rays stream through the evergreens. Glistening drops of melting snow fall through the air toward the ferny forest floor covered in a light dusting of snow.

A few days ago I used my photo, Misty Moon Over the Columbia River, to create some items on zazzle.

In this picture the moon lights up misty clouds with translucent white light in a stormy looking purplish sky above Longview, Washington. Surrounded by mountain ranges which disappearing into distant haze, the city lights blaze like dots of fire along the banks of the Columbia River. Seen through the forest on the hills of Rainier, Oregon the river flows thought the Columbia River Gorge towards the sea as the dusk begins to deepen into night…

Orbs of light hang in the air, caused by sunlight shining through the falling snow, in the forest on the way to Fox Creek, Rainier, Oregon, USA. Seen through the dark evergreen tree trunks, a bright white light illuminates the falling snow–inviting a wintry hike.

Last month I was on my way to pick my son up from an after school activity, and the moon was so beautiful I stopped and took some pictures on the way. It seemed to loom larger than usual in the sky, full with visible craters.  The sky was just beginning to change colors for sunset, and the clouds were an array of soft lavender and pink. Unfortunately, even with my zoom lens it was not possible to catch the size and scale of the moon in the sky. In most of the shots The moon ended up appearing as a bright orb–rather than showing all the craters as it had when seen with a naked eye; however, I was able to go back in and edit the shadows in some of the photos to bring it them back out. Below is one of my favorites of the ones I took that evening:

The moon lights up misty clouds with translucent white light in a stormy looking purplish sky above Longview, Washington. Surrounded by mountain ranges which disappearing into distant haze, the city lights blaze like dots of fire along the banks of the Columbia River. Seen through the forest on the hills of Rainier, Oregon the river flows thought the Columbia River Gorge towards the sea as the dusk begins to deepen into night.

In this digitally altered photograph, a dryad appears like an apparition of peripheral vision raising twig-like hands towards the moon through the purple clouds in the pink twilight sky.

The other day I was standing at the kitchen sink washing dishes, when the sun came out from behind a cloud and lit up the forest. Seeing it through the window, I  withstood the temptation to run grab my camera for awhile.after 5 or 10 minutes I ran out back figuring the light would not last much longer. I am glad I went out when I did Because I only had the opportunity for about 10 minutes or so and the light changed. The sun came out again for awhile later and I was able to go take pictures for another 10 minutes or so.

Autumn Sun Rays #1 print

The sun shines through the canopy of maple trees towering in the sky with leaves changing into brilliant autumn color.

Autumn Sun Rays #2 print

A golden array of fall foliage encircles the entryway to the forest beyond, resembling the face of a wood nymph with golden green locks of hair, as our vision is pulled deeper and deeper through the bright sunlit areas to the darkened recesses beyond.

Autumn Sun Rays #3 print

Bright sun rays create beautiful highlights among the bronze colored autumn foliage cascading down the slopes of a forested ravine.
