This is the painting I entered in the Columbian Artists Association 36th Annual Judged/Juried Spring Show (June 18, 2012 to June 27, 2012 at the ROSE CENTER FOR THE ARTS Lower Columbia College, 1600 Maple Street Longview, Washington):
Womans Autumnal Twilight Serenade by Dawna Morton
Woman’s Autumnal Twilight Serenade by Dawna Morton~
see it framed

A country girl in a white dress and cowboy hat pauses to listen to the sound of the wind before continuing to fiddle a serenade. Autumn leaves fall peacefully downward through the dark, but tranquil forest in the background, as their silently drifting shapes create an air of magical wonder —glowing in the light in their downwards spiral towards the forest floor. As the wind flutters her dress and her hair, it also picks up the notes of her music from her inward ear, and carries them afar to the world.

Woman’s Autumnal Twilight Serenade on fineartamerica

I first got the idea for this painting when I was cleaning up some gentian violet that spilled all over the bathroom counter. I made the mistake of setting the wadded up  cloth diaper which was used in the cleanup on the edge of the bathtub–which just made a bigger mess; however, when it was removed later I noticed the stain left behind resembled a cowboy hat, and upon closer inspection I saw a cowgirl playing a fiddle in my imagination. There are photos of the stain in my facebook album also.

I took a bunch of photos of the stain from all sorts of angles , and set them aside to use as a reference later before cleaning the whole thing up with a bleach spray. Then when my friend Heather suggested I should enter the competition, I thought this would make a great painting for my entry.

With a bit of a folksy feel, this painting has come to have a spiritual meaning to me. The wind can be symbolic both of trials and of the Spirit. Notice that the Tree in the background looks gnarled and weathered and bent by the winds that have beset it. We are like that sometimes, our past and the trials we’ve been through sometimes they make us feel all gnarled up inside, and we have to move beyond that and find healing. the leaves falling and glinting in the light symbolize change and the beauty of shedding the old so we can put on beautiful and tender new growth when after the process of weathering the winter season. The woman in the painting appears to have found a moment of peaceful clarity as she listens to the sound of the wind (or the Spirit)– then after listening she begins to play what she has heard, what she has learned, so that the wind can then brighten lives by carrying its message through her music to the hearts of listeners throughout the world.

A few days ago I used my photo, Misty Moon Over the Columbia River, to create some items on zazzle.

In this picture the moon lights up misty clouds with translucent white light in a stormy looking purplish sky above Longview, Washington. Surrounded by mountain ranges which disappearing into distant haze, the city lights blaze like dots of fire along the banks of the Columbia River. Seen through the forest on the hills of Rainier, Oregon the river flows thought the Columbia River Gorge towards the sea as the dusk begins to deepen into night…

Today I used my digital composition, Aeriel’s Gift, to create some stationery, photo cards, and invitations.

In the twilight of Aeriel’s Gift, abstracted silhouettes of trees shapes, back-lit with pink and lavender fog, create images of tree nymphs. A dryad sits atop the tree canopy holding a fairy in her hand. The wood nymphs and the sky spirit look on as she opens her heart and offers her love as a gift to her creator. Glowing with light, her love ascends, circling up through the misty clouds and beyond the moon like smoke of incense from an altar.

This stationery features “Cinderella’s Arrival” Oil pastel crayon on paper, 9X12″ circa 1992. As Cinderella approaches the stairway to the castle, a glimpse of the prince at the ball is seen through a lighted window. Neither of them knowing what the future hold in store, it is a poignant moment filled with suspense and mystery. This is a great stationery for those sappy love letters 😉

I have recently started posting t shirts for sale in my Redbubble gallery. It’s not as easy to do as it is in my zazzle gallery, since I had to find, download, and learn how to use a new to me photo/image editing program. Interestingly enough I found the program because of an article on zazzle’s blog about free alternatives to Photoshop. Based on several recommendations there I decided to try out paint.net. I had previously given some thought to trying out gimp, but was unsure of how to install it and get it to work on windows. So far I am enjoying paint.net, and with some patches available for download (the links are available in their forums), I have been able to do everything I have needed.
I am still interested in getting my hands on one of those Correll paint pads I have heard so much about from other artists in artist magazine’s online art forums though. My one piece of digital art, Aeriel’s Gift, was really fun and exciting to do–but frustrating because doing any detail work was so painstakingly slow and difficult using a mouse. I would like to try doing more things like that in the future.

Here are the  t shirts I have for sale on redbubble so far. They are available on several different styles of  shirt as well as in multiple color choices.

9 X 12″ chalk on paper, 2009, by Dawna Morton. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
Done entirely from memory in the space of about an hour, without referencing a photo, this large magenta colored flower sits on a moody background of expressive leaf shapes. in colors of green and purple, with hints of magenta, the foliage fans out around this striking flower like a burst of living flames.

Oil pastel crayon on paper, 9X12″ circa 1992. As Cinderella approaches the stairway to the castle, a glimpse of the prince at the ball is seen through a lighted window. Neither of them knowing what the future hold in store, it is a poignant moment filled with suspense and mystery.

Watercolor on paper, 9×12″, 2008. Along the borders of Gnat Creek Oregon a tiny white wildflower blooms in front of a rock, basking in the summer sunlight. I love the warmth of the sunlight on the mottled looking rock contrasted with the cool purplish shadows and the impressionistic background of lush vegetation.

Done entirely from memory without referencing a photo, this oil pastel drawing of a pink and white speckled stargazer lily on a brown background was completed in about an hour. the diagonal flow of this dynamic flower creates a vibrant energy.

I have been thinking about posting this drawing for a while now. If I remember correctly this is back from my senior year in high school about 1992. My mom had bought me an art kit that had some oil pastels in it and I had never tried them before, so I tested it out with this drawing.  I love the air of suspense and mystery as Cinderella approaches the castle unseen and unknown by the prince. Although a slight glimpse of the prince is seen through the lighted window, it is not enough to truely understand who he is or what he is like–leaving him a figure shrouded in mystery. There are so many unknowns for them at this point in their story. They do not know if they will have their happily ever after, or if they will find true love. Perhaps they both ponder on these questions as they are so close to this momentous event in their lives, unseen and unknown and yet on the verge of seeing and becoming known. Who is this mysterious princess? And is the prince truly the man of her dreams? Will they truly have their happily ever after?
