Every spring I look forward to the old fashioned white bleeding hearts coming into bloom in the front yard, as well as traditional red ones , and a pink native variety to Oregon in the backyard–since they are the first things to bloom in my yard each year. Last year I transplanted these red ones from between several ferns to a roomier and slightly sunnier location. Hopefully they will start filling out a little better now. For weeks now my trigger finger has been itching as I have been keeping a close eye on my bleeding hearts and on the sunlight out the kitchen window for the perfect photo opportunity. A few weeks ago I managed to get out with my camera for a few minutes on several separate occasions when there was a break in the rain and the sun peeked out brilliantly between the clouds.

In this softly focused macro photo, a red bleeding heart hangs from its stem alone in the sun as beads of rainwater glisten on it’s leaves. Beyond are the dark shadows of the forest and the remains of last autumn’s brown leaves strewn on the ground.

This expressive, softly focused, digitally edited photo is of a row of red bleeding hearts hanging from a branch. The two blossoms in the center seem to snuggle up to each other as rain droplets glisten on the flowers’ translucent edges. Rich and vibrant red, the glowing heart-shaped blossoms stand out beautifully from the dark night background of shadow and almost abstracted plant shapes.
Created by using a graduated tint as well as adjusting som of the other lighting settings to make the flowers and water droplets stand out, this photo is stunningly beautiful. Although this editing technique does not work with every photo, when it does the results are beautiful and dramatic. The less edited version is also shown below.

Every spring I look forward to the old fashioned white bleeding hearts coming into bloom in the front yard, as well as traditional red ones , and a pink native variety in the backyard. Originally I just had these pink one’s which I got at an earth day fair back when I lived out in Gresham. It was one of many native species of plants being given away that day to encourage people to grow more native species in their yards. At first mine did not do well because I had them in a shallow planter bowl. Then I realized that bleeding hearts actually have long tap roots, so I transplanted them out back, near a path we are building down into the forest,  into a bottomless planter  made from an old tire I hauled out of our woods which looked a bit like a big flower to me because of the zig zag edge that was already cut into it when I found it. Since then they have really filled out and started blooming more prolifically. For weeks now my trigger finger has been itching as I have been keeping a close eye on my bleeding hearts and on the sunlight out the kitchen window for the perfect photo opportunity. A few weeks ago I managed to get out with my camera for a few minutes on two separate occasions when there was a break in the rain and the sun peeked out brilliantly between the clouds.

While I was out hiding the Easter eggs I noticed some trillium flowers were blooming out in our forest earlier than usual. So the next time the light was good I grabbed my camera and hiked back out there. There are definitely benefits to living on a half acre of forest 🙂 I only got a couple of shots before the sun went behind the clouds, but that’s typical Oregon spring weather for you 😉

Glistening wet from a recent spring shower, this exotic looking purple trillium blooms beautifully in the Oregon rain forest. A ray of bright sunlight warms the ferns and leaf strewn forest floor in the background.

During December, after a snowfall, I went hiking down the hill towards Fox Creek to get some pictures of the snow covered forest. This one had a great ethereal feel to it at  thumbnail size, but it lost much of the effect when seen at full resolution. So I tried opening it up with Picassa3 and using several of the editing tools to adjust the lighting soften the edges and add a little glow to it.

A cold winters day hike through the snow towards Fox Creek in Rainier, Oregon reveals a pale blue winter sky seen through a stand of trees near the edge of a forest glade on the bottom of a sloping hill. Still attached to twigs and brambles autumn leaves appear golden in the sun like trail markers bordering a snowy path zig zagging across the hills an into the distance.

A digitally altered photo of a snowy sunlit forest glade covered in brambles at the bottom of a steep hill in picturesque Rainier, Oregon. The winter sky glows through the forest canopy in a golden haze of sunlit mist, causing the trees to fade off into the distance.

This fall as I was sending my kids out to the school bus in the dark hours of the morning, I felt  compelled to snap this photo of my neighbors flag –as seen from my front porch.  It seems they leave it up in all weather, day , night sleet, rain, snow (yeah I KNOW). Anyway as the rain came down and the flag was waving in the wind, I was struck by how the streetlight lit it up against the darkness of the sky and the rain glistened and sparkled as it fell.

Than a month or 2 ago as I was thinking of all the people who are down on our country  and who take for granted the freedoms which our forefathers fought, bled and died — as well as our brave soldiers today who continue to do so,  I thought of a slogan: “Every day this flag flies free is Memorial Day and Veterans Day to me!”   the past several weeks I have been thinking,  “EVERY day this flag flies free is Independence Day to me!” is also appropriate.

So, I got on Zazzle.com and posted both slogans along with this photo on cards , shirts, bumper stickers, stickers, magnets, buttons, postcards, mouse pads, purses and just about every other item they have for sale. My favorite is the card that says “EVERY day this flag flies free is Independence Day to me!” on the upper flap–and on the lower it says,”Happy Independence Day!” I think it would be great to send any day of the year, why wait till the 4th of July!

One morning when I was dropping my son off for school late (AGAIN), I saw these unusual looking mushrooms growing in the grass under some conifers by the parking lot. They were HUGE –at least 3-5 inches across and reminded me of something out of Alice in Wonderland. Some of them were deep red, others deep yellowish-orange, and one was a silvery white.  All of them had these big warty light colored patches all over them. I was really glad I had my camera on me ; )   The yellower ones even reminded me a bit of a sesame seed hamburger bun LOL. Intrigued, I decided to check on wikipedia to see if I could figure out what they were. Right at the top of their article about mushroom was a picture of one Amanita muscaria just like what I had photographed. I was astonished to find what I was looking for so easily. It turns out they are quite poisonous and get their common name (fly agaric or fly Amanita) from an ancient practice of using them to attract and kill flies.

Amanita muscaria var. formosa. or possibly  var. guessowii ? Globe shaped, immature yellowish orange mushroom speckled with warts ALL over the cap. Resembling a sesame seed hamburger bun, this poisonous mushroom is surrounded by grass covered in beads of morning dew.

A mature reddish brown Amanita Muscaria mushroom,  with tan warts which has become  concave– exposing the open gills below,  stands on dew covered grass strewn with pine needles.

Immature red amanita muscaria mushroom (possibly var. flavivolvata ?) with tan warts on a lawn of brown and green dew drop covered grass mixed with clover.

A large red amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata mushroom stands on a lawn bejeweled with drops of morning dew. When seen at full resolution, even the shadows of each wart on it are visible, showing each facet of it’s 3 dimensions.Almost hidden behind it is a newly forming amanita muscaria. Beyond is a lighter colored, and oddly shaped, amanita muscaria var. formosa which is fully open, exposing the gills to view.

Two amanita muscaria (probably var. guessowii) mushrooms of different sizes and maturity on a dew covered field of grass and clover strewn with pine needles. On the very large one, one of the warts reminds me of the spaceship Enterprise.

Two amanita muscaria var. guessowii mushrooms  cuddle up together lovingly, surrounded by dew covered grass.

Two amanita muscaria var. guessowii stand on field of dew covered grass. One is mature and open–but partially eaten by pests, the other immature and sheltered under cover of the older one. Both have characteristic light colored, bumpy warts  and yellowish orange coloring which is a deeper, redder color in the center.

The autumn sun shines in the fall sky , creating visible rays of light as it streams through the forest canopy.

The bright autumn sun glows through the Oregon forest.

The autumn sun illuminates two clumps of maple “helicopters” hanging translucently in the air in front of a green forested background.

Maple leaves illuminated by the autumn sun reach upwards towards the softly focused drooping cedar greenery glistening with sunlit raindrops.

A lone cedar branch, glistening with drops of rain in the autumn sun, points like an old wizened finger towards a raindrop hanging in the air surrounded by the softly focused background full of fall foliage. A solitary strand of a spider web traverses from the branch and beyond the raindrop as it shines in the sun.

Algae Frond Macro

Algae Frond Macro

Taken while canoeing at Ensign Ranch in Cle Elum, Washington, in July 2008, this macro photo of an algae frond in the water resembles an abstract painting . I love the golden glints of sunlight in the ripples on the green  water’s surface over the glowing sunlit water plant below.

Oregon "Passionflower" #2.

When I was taking a walk the other day, I came upon a lovely site which I had never before seen even though I have hiked there more times than I can count over the past several years. Luckily I had my camera on me. ;D There was a humongous dark purple flower, which resembled a passionflower in full bloom. I could not believe my eyes. It was gorgeous! The light wasn’t the best, because it was the middle of the day, but I snapped some photos anyway.

I was so excited that I went back later towards evening when the light was better to get more pictures. Lighting really made a difference. (I’ve posted both sets so you can see why it is best to take photos in the morning or the evening.) During the middle of the day the light comes down at a 90 degree angle, or close to it, causing photos to look flat and uninteresting.

Notice in photos 8, 9, and 10 how the light draws the attention to the flower rather than the background. I also makes the flower more rounded and 3 dimensional.

Oregon "Passionflower" #4

It’s a mystery to me what kind of flower this is, although I assume it is some sort of native species. It grew in almost full shade and the flower was about 6 inches or more tall. While I was out taking the second set of pictures, I bumped into the man who owns the adjacent property . He did not know what it is either, but said he used to have a bunch of them behind his garage–but pulled them out because they stink really bad. I could not smell anything and am thinking I wouldn’t mind having some in my yard a good distance from the house (just in case they DO smell LOL). Perhaps it is a relative of the skunk cabbage? I’m not sure because they grow in more marshy areas and you almost always smell those long before you see them. These were on a hill high and dry.

Whatever they are, apparently the reason I had never seen one despite the frequency of my walks down this particular trail is because it does not bloom very long. Less than 2 days after I took these pictures the bloom had died. Within a week the entire plant died back and the spot is now covered in morning glory instead. I’m glad I happened to take a walk down that way when my mystery flower was blossoming.

Several days later I went to my friend’s house for an art day again. My friend worked on some miniature sculptures, and I decided to paint a picture of my Oregon “passion flower” from memory. Working entirely from memory is one of the exercises suggested in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards. For those who would like to learn to draw or increase their drawing skills, I would highly recommend getting a copy.

Oregon "Passionflower" #8

Entitled “Oregon ‘Passionflower’ Memory.” my painting is watercolor on paper 11×15.” skipping a pencil sketch, I started painting a translucent minty green glaze around the flower. I had intended to paint in the dark green foliage behind the flower as well, but liked the transparent glaze so well that I left it that way in the end. Next I painted in the fuchsia of the flower, leaving some lighter areas and adding some yellow highlights. Then I used purple for the stamen and the shading. As a finishing touch I painted the stem a minty green with fuchsia and purple shadows, repeating those colors with a light glaze in the corners.
