A friend recently informed me, when she was over for a visit, that she had always thought bleeding hearts only came in pink. I am so glad they come in multiple colors, because I have three different varieties growing at my house 😀
Every spring I look forward to the old fashioned white bleeding hearts coming into bloom in the front yard, as well as traditional red ones , and a pink native variety in the backyard. For weeks now my trigger finger has been itching as I have been keeping a close eye on them and on the sunlight out the window for the perfect photo opportunity. Two weeks ago I managed to get out with my camera for a few minutes on two separate occasions when there was a break in the rain and the sun peeked out brilliantly between the clouds.

I have to say I LOVE my yard!
Every spring I look forward to the  white bleeding hearts coming into bloom in the front yard, I love their old fashioned beauty. They are the first blossoms in my yard each spring, followed by the red bleeding hearts, and the pink ones, blooming in the backyard. For weeks now my trigger finger has been itching as I have been keeping a close eye on them and on the sunlight out the window for the perfect photo opportunity. Last week I managed to get out with my camera for a few minutes on two separate occasions when there was a break in the rain and the sun peeked out brilliantly between the clouds. After looking the first batch of pictures, while doing some editing, it occurred to me that they would look lovely against a dark background. so the next time the sun was out I grabbed a dark blue binder we had and stuck it behind the blossoms in the photos. This worked beautifully after editing to soften the background as well as making some other artistic editing choices. I may experiment with some other background choices the next time the lighting is good. Here are just a few, I’ll be posting more here soon….

Elizabeth at the Beach

Elizabeth at the Beach by Dawna Morton

Elizabeth at the Beach by Dawna Morton

Water soluble oils on gessoed paper, approximately 15 x 22″, 2006. Intellectual property of Dawna Morton. All rights reserved. Do not copy.

The idea for Elizabeth at the Beach. came to me back in 2005 when Elizabeth came back home to Oregon for a visit from out of state. She was so sad that her schedule while visiting did not allow enough time to have a day at the beach that I decided to do a painting of a little piece of “home” for her.  I  found a picture  for reference in my photo album from a day we had spent at Cannon Beach as teenagers. While the tide was low  we waded out to Haystack Rock and climbed up on part of it. On the way out there I  turned back towards shore  to snap a picture of Elizabeth who was using the rocks as stepping stones some distance behind me.

Too simplify the composition of the painting I reduced the number of beach houses on shore, people, and rocks in the water in the scene. Since the painting is quite a bit larger than the photo, I used a ruler and some math to mark key elements on the paper in the right places and in the correct scale and relation to each other. I used this method more sparingly in this painting than on several I had completed previously since it can be rather tedious when overdone.

Once I was done with the sketch, I started in  painting a layer of light blue in the sky and then overlaid it thinly with some white– being careful to leave it patchy to create the impression of an overcast spring day. Then I used a dark blueish green to add in the  mountains covered in evergreen trees. The houses on the lighter yellow green foothills were all painted in earth tones to keep them from drawing too much attention away from the focal point. Next came painting the sand. I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to get the sand right since I had never tried painting sand before. What I ended up doing was painting a layer of a brownish mustard yellow and then using a two variants of it applied in semi-transparent horizontal strokes to create highlights and shadows.  After that it was time to put in the water and rocks in the foreground. Although in the reference photo the water was transparent, allowing the sand and rocks below to be visible, I chose to portray it as a vibrant opaque blue instead. With the white sea foam of the waves I added in, it shows more of a feeling of the wind that is constantly blowing along the coast and gives more energy to the piece.  I also added  bits of green on the rocks to give the impression of algae and  perhaps some sea anemones . Finally I added the people, painting them all in blue, red, and white to unify them. When I was almost done I accidenaly got a smudge of the dark blue paint in the sky because I had some wet paint on my hands. Instead of painting over it I decided to use it to make a group of seagulls circling in the air which worked well with the composition.

Explore the tidal pools with Elizabeth on a windy day along the Pacific Coast in Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Last week when I was doing some marketing optimization of my Zazzle product ( making sure there are links to help people find matching postage, stationery, and stickers etc). I decided that some of the details in my water soluble oil painting, Midsummer Daydream, would make some beautiful stickers to match some of the stationery I already had for sale. They also make pretty magnets and key chains.

A few years ago I got some spectacular photos of a Great Blue Heron while on a family outing at Trojan.  This past week I decided to use this shot of the large bird swooping over the water with its wings outstretched to their full span and its feet trailing behind to create some new items on zazzle.

This week I created a series of products on zazzle Using my painting, Oakridge Reservoir #3

Watercolor painting on Fabriano Uno 300 lb Soft Press 100% cotton paper, 7 1/2″x 11″, 2001. Sunrise over Oakridge Reservoir, on a tranquil Oregon morning. Smooth as glass, the water mirrors calm reflections of driftwood and a fishing boat. Peace and solitude as the day breaks over the cool blue mountains. This is one of a series of 4 watercolor paintings I did of Oakridge Reservoir quite a number of years ago. We went camping in Oakridge during august one year for vacation, and while we were there I took some lovely reference photos of the reservoir early in the morning. It’s a really lovely place, not far from Springfield and Eugene, Oregon–it’s very family friendly with lots of outdoor recreational activities. Painted on a very smooth sample of Fabriano Uno 300 lb Soft Press 100% cotton paper, this early morning scene inspires reflection and peacefulness as well as a sense of the majesty and grandeur of nature and God’s creations. The waters of the reservoir are smooth as glass as they reflect the logs and driftwood within the reflections of the shadowy mountains. An evergreen branch seems to point past the small fishing boat moored alone at the dock towards the pale yellow dawn light filling the sky and creeping across the mountains while three pale gray clouds hover in the distance.

This week I used my painting Oakridge Reservoir #4 to create some items on zazzle. The original is watercolor on Fabriano Uno 300 lb Rough 100% cotton paper, 7 1/2″ x 11″, 2001.  A gnarly tree stump surrounded by weathered gray branches juxtaposed against a view of algae and rocks under the vibrant blue water of Oakridge Reservoir. Forested green Oregon mountains frame the hazy blue mountain ranges in the distance. These would be a great inexpensive way to get a souvenir of a great vacation or just enjoy some fine art.
