Recently I added a series of products to my zazzle store featuring my watercolor painting Oakridge Reservoir #2. The original is on Fabriano Uno 140lb hot press 100% cotton paper, 7 1/2″ x 11″, 2001. This is one in a series of four paintings based on some photos I took early in the morning while camping with my family in Oakridge, Oregon.  Done in an almost photo-realistic style, this painting draws the eye beyond the upended tree roots protruding from the shore of Oakridge Reservoir toward the mountain ranges and pale blue morning sky in the distance. A lone twig sticks up from the water, while algae and tree stumps seem to float  tranquilly and as the water deepens. Green and gold, the colors of the forest shimmer in the water as the cool blue Oregon mountains beckon as they glistening white shore in the distance. Many guests visiting my home have stared in amazement and asked, “is that a photograph?” because of how realistic it is.They are even more astounded when I tell them it’s a painting.

Although I painted this series  specifically with the intention to sell the original paintings, my family loves them so much I have been forbidden to ever sell the originals 🙂 For those who are interested in owning a copy I have archival quality  fine art prints available  for purchase at Imagekind.com, posters at Zazzle.com and matted prints at Redbubble.com..and now these new items on zazzle…

One of the things I got done last week was to create a series of product using my photo, Forest Sun Rays in the Snow #32. A snow covered branch creates an arch, with ferns hanging from its moss covered bark, across a tree lined path toward the summit of this hill in the woods of Rainier Oregon. Beyond the forest the sky shines crystal blue in the early morning light.

Last week i created a series of product on zazzle based on my photo, Early Morning Sun Rays #19. The early morning sun beams its rays from the azure winter sky through the leafless maples to the cedars and forest below. The sky is a pristine light blue with a hint of thin white clouds in the background. Darkened outlines of bare branches in the foreground and cedar trees in the background provide stark contrast with the early morning sun. As the rays travel from the sun through the forest, several large sunspots a of lighter and darker red radiate from the sun. One small green sunspot floats like a small orb in the midst of the trees.

Last week I created a series of products using my photo,  Sunrise Over the Columbia River #5. As the sun rises over the Columbia river, a masonic lodge and church steeple rise above the forest of the surrounding hills in Rainier, Oregon. Silvery gray and luminescent white in the early morning light, the clouds blanket the pacific northwest sky.

One of the projects completed last week was a series of products on zazzle which feature my photgraph,  Sunrise Over the Columbia River #4. The Columbia River shines radiantly in the sunrise as it flows tranquilly towards the pacific ocean bordered by dark silhouettes of evergreen trees standing like sentinels on the Oregon shore and mist shrouded mountains beyond in Washington.

One of the projects I have been working on over the past week is to create a series of products on Zazzle using a picture I took a few months ago from one of our windows. Looking from Rainier, Oregon across the Columbia river towards Washington is a spectacular view of bright sunlight shining on a layer of dark, moody clouds above a layer of golden morning sky. Beyond the silhouettes of evergreens and small town buildings, the Columbia river shimmers with an amber glow of reflected sunrise as the far bank is obscured in a dark morning mist…

Last week I created a series of new product on zazzle using another photo from one of my hikes in the snow last winter. In this photo the pale blue winter sky is visible through the forest canopy, as the sun’s rays stream through the evergreens. Glistening drops of melting snow fall through the air toward the ferny forest floor covered in a light dusting of snow.

I just realized  I never made a blog entry about this painting! Better Late than never…

The idea for Midsummer Daydream came from a contest on artistnetwork.com, Artistnetwork.com’s third All-Media Paint-Off!, Garden Angel .The assigned subject was to do a painting based on the photo, Garden Angel, which was of a statue in a garden. Originally the statue in a garden idea did not appeal to me, but as I thought about it I decided if I changed the basic concept from a statue to a living Wood Sprite or Nymph based loosely on the statue and completely changed the composition, that I could make something I liked. Having read a book recently on  composition, I decided to put together something that would move the eye in a circular manner through the painting.
What I came up with was a whimsical scene depicting the young red-headed wood sprite dipping one toe in the water, laying down at the edge of  a lily pond, and creating ripples in his reflection by running his finger in the water playfully while gazing dreamily at his leaf boat which is floating away past lily pads. Completing the scene is a series of faeries skating across the blue water and doing various ballet poses on the lily pads, interspersed with red lilies. Keeping the pallette fairly simple and limited it to blues, greens, and reds helped tie things together and keep it more cohesive.

This  painting is the first I ever completed on time for a competition (I had done one other for another artistsnetwork competition but missed the deadline by a few hours).  This particular painting is very special to me because it was done at a time when I was changing how I viewed myself from a person who “wanted to be an artist someday ”  to seeing myself as an artist–symbolized by the ripples in the sprites reflection. Also there are several areas in the painting that are a little off, such as the position of the sprite’s back leg, but as I have thought about it that has become symbolic to me as well. We all have things we let keep us from following our dreams. To me this painting is about moving on, and living the dream without letting those things stand in the way anymore–moving beyond the mental blocks of  “I can’t do that because” and just believing in ourselves and doing it anyway.

The title “Midsummer Daydream” was inspired by how the wood sprite reminds me of Puck in Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

One of the things I have been working on this week is a series of product featuring my photo, Forest Sun Rays in the Snow #24, that I took while on a hike in the woods near my home last winter. A ray of sunlight shines down through the snow-covered forest, creating a bright icy lacework of tree branches. Four trees surround a small clearing in the woods like a bier, as logs blanketed in snow on the sloping forest floor resemble a skeleton, below icy tree limbs forming a ghostly apparition of a horses face like a trusty steed standing guard.
