Watercolor on Fabriano Uno 140lb hot press 100% cotton paper, 7 1/2″ x 11″, 2001. Intellectual property of Dawna Morton. All rights reserved. Do not copy.
One in a series of four paintings based on some photos I took early in the morning while camping with my family in Oakridge, Oregon, this realistic watercolor draws the eye beyond the upended tree roots protruding from the shore of Oakridge Reservoir toward the mountain ranges and pale blue morning sky in the distance. A lone twig sticks up from the water, while algae and tree stumps seem to float tranquilly and as the water deepens. Green and gold, the colors of the forest shimmer in the water as the cool blue Oregon mountains beckon as they glistening white shore in the distance.
This beautiful, small painting is artistically done on an acid free, smooth textured,140lb hot press 100% cotton paper made by Fabriano Uno. Many guests visiting my home have stared in amazement and asked, “is that a photograph?” because of how realistic it is.They are even more astounded when I tell them it’s a painting.
Although I painted this series specifically with the intention to sell the original paintings, my family loves them so much I have been forbidden to ever sell them

9 X 12″ chalk on paper, 2009, by Dawna Morton. All rights reserved.
Done entirely from memory in the space of about an hour, without referencing a photo, this large magenta colored flower sits on a moody background of expressive leaf shapes. In a limited palette of green and purple, with hints of magenta, the foliage fans out around this striking flower like a burst of living flames.
I don’t recall working with chalk before, I tried it out when I was at a friend’s house and borrowed hers. It’s a lot like working with charcoal only a little less messy and in color
I usually prefer working in watercolor, but actually like this dragon lily better than the watercolor one I did from memory earlier. this is more energetic and vibrant and the watercolor version is more calm and peaceful. I really like how evocative the impressionistic and slightly abstracted background of foliage turned out.

The power went out, and like an idiot I neglected to unplug the computer. Wo is me when the power came back on it fried my pc! Hopefully it only fried the motherboard. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the hard drive is ok and that I will be able to retrieve all my photos. I’d been having trouble with my disk drive and had been unable to back things up recently. I had four months worth of photos I had not posted for sale yet as well as several years of digital family photos that are irreplaceable.
It is several months later and I am up and running again. We upgraded the hard drive, mother board, chip, memory, graphics card, a battery backup/surge protector and got one of those really nice flat screen high definition monitors and even a wireless mouse. I am so glad my husband knows how to fix computers and that we were able to find things on sale. We were able to salvage my photos from the old hard drive and I will be posting more soon
